Holmfirth High School Governing Body

In accordance with Statute, the Governing Body of Holmfirth High School reconstituted under the School Governance (Constitution) Regulations 2012 with effect from 1 January 2019.  The Governing Body’s Instrument of Government sets out a total membership of 12 Governors consisting of the following categories:-

(a)          1 Headteacher

(b)          1 LA Governor

(c)          1 Staff Governor

(d)          2 Parent Governors

(e)          7 Co-opted Governors

When the new Instrument of Government came into effect on 1 January 2019, Governors remaining within their current category (including Parent, and Local Authority Governors) continued to serve out their current term of office. Governors who were newly appointed, or reappointed to a different category at the time of reconstitution, (including Co-opted Governors, and staff), started a new term of office. Thereafter, newly appointed Governors serve a 4 year term of office.

The three core functions of the Governing Body are:-

1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

2.  Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the
school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff, and;

3.  Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money
is well spent”.

I am a Co-opted Governor at present, having been a Parent Governor from November 2010 until November 2014. I believe it is important to be able to give back to the school that my two (now grown up) sons – one of whom had a Statement of Special Educational Needs – both attended.

I work in Kirklees, predominantly with Primary schools but also at Key Stage 3 and also in the Pupil Referral Unit,  with children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs and so I think I am able to bring an understanding of children’s needs to the role. I attend both the Resources and Standards Committees.

Outside of work I enjoy walking, reading and listening to all kinds of music.

I live locally and my children both attend school. I was elected as a parent governor in early 2018 and I was appointed as Chair of the Governing Body in the September of that year.

Our school aims to support and encourage all our pupils to be the best they can be and to become young people who the community can be proud of. We want all our pupils to enjoy school and achieve.  I am absolutely committed to those aims.

Since becoming Chair, I have worked with my governor colleagues to ensure that the school has effective governance in place to support our school aims. That work continues as we strive to continually improve.

Professionally I am a Human Resources Director, currently working for an organisation in Kirklees where I am responsible for all workforce matters and organisational development.

My youngest daughter currently attends Holmfirth High School, and she is my third child to do so in the last 15 years. I have been a Teacher in Further Education for the last 16 years, giving me a very good understanding of the educational and employment expectations that our children face. Prior to teaching I was a residential Social Worker for 10 years supporting young people and adults who had challenging behaviour due to specific conditions, including Autism and mental ill health.As a parent governor I hope to draw upon my work and personal experiences to inform and support the school and pupils to be an outstanding school that enables our children to achieve success in what they do. In my spare time I enjoy being creative and I love to be outside often practising Mindfulness to relax.
