Year 6 Transition
A Word From the Headteacher
We are delighted that you have chosen to send your child to be educated with us. As we all know life is very different now to how we all envisaged it last autumn when you were filling in Secondary School Admissions application forms. Obviously, this means that the usual transition period will look and feel different to previous years. However, over the coming weeks we will be in regular contact to keep you up to date with our plans. Please also visit our website regularly.
Moving to secondary school is big moment for a child and their family but we would hope that our new pupils will look forward to the change. We are most certainly very excited to meet and get to know them.
Your child’s Form Tutor will be in contact before the summer break to introduce themselves to you and your child. Year 7 will start school on Monday 7th September (with Year 11) so that they can have their first day with less pupils in school. Please note this is a change from the transition booklet, which has been amended manually, as a result of the pandemic. If you have any concerns or queries, please have a look through the FAQ on the Transition page of our website or alternatively please contact your child’s Head of House in the first instance.
Under normal circumstances we would be delighted to welcome you to the school towards the end of the term. We will create the opportunity to do this but at present we are not committing to a date in the hope that government guidance will allow us to meet in larger groups (even if it’s outside). If necessary we will do these meetings remotely. We will let you know a date and time with plenty of notice. Please note the original Transition Evening of Wednesday 8th July has therefore been cancelled.
As a school we are unashamedly keen on uniform. I know that for some children and their parents/carers this will be different from what they are used to at primary school. I must urge you to look at our website and the information in the transition booklet so that you are aware of expectations. A particular minefield is shoes. If you are unsure whether what you buy is acceptable please contact your child’s Head of House so that they can confirm that the particular item fits with our policy. Please be aware that if it doesn’t, it will need to be changed and so to save us all from that disappointment, please get in touch and ask us.
We realise this is a challenging time for all Year 6 pupils so with this in mind, over the next 4 weeks, every Monday, we will be publishing new information on our transition webpage. We will include such things as a virtual tour of the school, introductions from the Heads and Deputy Heads of House along with Form Tutors and Student House Leaders.
We look forward to welcoming your child to Holmfirth High School in September and we hope that the information that we provide over the next few weeks will help their transition to our school to be as smooth as possible.
