Year 6 Transition

The Transition Process

We know that it is a big move from primary to secondary school and here at Holmfirth High we are working hard to ensure that your child has the best possible start.

In advance of your child’s move we will meet with their Year 6 teachers to find out a little bit more about them, such as – what are their favourite subjects, who are your child’s friends, what are their hobbies and interests, our specialist staff will also ensure that we have any additional information so that we can best support children with additional needs, medical conditions or any other support necessary.

In preparation for their start at Holmfirth High School, your child will be placed into a form group with other children from our feeder primary schools and we try to ensure that a good balance is achieved throughout.  As best as we can, we try to ensure that each child is with a friend identified by their primary school but also that there are equal numbers from the larger schools throughout the year group along with an equal mix of boys and girls.  We know how anxious some pupils must feel if they are coming from smaller schools or coming as an individual from out of catchment schools so again we endeavour to put these children together.  We also run extra transition afternoons for vulnerable and out of catchment pupils.

Visits will be made by our Head Teacher to meet your child in primary school (if they are in catchment) with our SENCO to ensure that we can answer any questions they may have and to speak to Year 6 teachers to pass on information.

We want to ensure that both your child and yourself feel well informed, happy and excited about starting secondary school and what it means to be part of Holmfirth High School. However, transition doesn’t stop once your child starts, we also provide an opportunity, early on in the school year for you to meet your child’s Form Tutor and find out how well they have settled. For these reasons we offer the following Transition events:

Year 6 Induction Day - Tuesday 30 June

We look forward to meeting all our children on the Year 6 visit when they will come and join their form and form tutor.  They will also have an opportunity to meet their house.  This will be a full day visit where children will enjoy sample lessons during the day and spend time with their form tutor.  Pupils should bring a pen, pencil and ruler in a school bag.  They may also take part in a PE session so should wear a pair of trainers for the day.  No extra PE clothing is required, just their normal school clothes.

Children should make their own way here either on foot, by school bus or parents may bring them.  They should be here by 08:45 and on arrival they should go to the main hall.

They will experience lunch in our dining areas whether they use our ‘Eat In’ servery or bring a packed lunch. Cash to the value of £3.50 should cover any purchases throughout the day.

At the end of the day they will be released at 15:25 to either walk home, be picked up by parents or get the school bus home.  Buses leave at approximately 15:40.

If your child is carrying medication, please ask them to tell their form tutor.  If your child is ill and unable to visit, please ring the school on 01484 691460.

Year 6 Parent Induction Evening - Wednesday 8 July

We would like to invite you to the intake evening for the parents of our in-coming Year 7 pupils.  Due to numbers we split the evening into two halves and request that this is a parent only evening.  You will have an introduction to the school by Mr Stitchman, our head teacher and to meet your child’s form tutor, heads of house and student leaders.   You will be sent out a transition brochure before this date which will indicate which house your child is in.  You will also have time to buy uniform, PE kit and equipment.  Pupils will only be told which form they are in by their primary school.

The timetable for the evening will be published on our website nearer the time once houses have been released.

Moving on in September

Once your child starts in September we know it can be a difficult time so they will be well looked after by our student leaders who will be assigned to each form.  They will have the support of their form tutor, our heads and deputy heads of house along with our pastoral team to ensure they have the best possible start.  We have lots in place to support our students such as; Peer Mentors and Restorative Practice to ensure that we deal with any issues that may occur.
